Happily Ever After: Hercules

A completed assignment for Painting II. We were supposed to take one of our favorite movies and use it as a jumping-off point to create our piece. I decided to take Disney's "Hercules" and explore how it differs from the Roman myth as retold in "Bullfinch's Mythology". The story of how Hercules acquired Hippolyta's girdle struck me as wildly out of character for how Hercules is portrayed both in the myth and the movie, so I illustrated that scene. As I worked on it, it turned into a commentary on how society tends to excuse the actions of those we have claimed as heroes, which often leads to ignoring or even furthering harm against vulnerable people (such as women).
